"But I decided then and there, 'Mine.' " I once stole a completely functional smartphone. This happened when I just started middle school. I was a sixth grader. I was in a theater extracurricular and one day, I think we were cleaning the prop room, I found this phone. Charged it. Was -- Powered it on. It worked. The lock screen I think was a photo of what either was a current student in like 7th or 8th grade or someone who had just gone up to high school. But it was definitely someone's phone, not just a prop. But I decided then and there, "Mine." Yoinked that thing. Looked up how to factory reset it, wiped it, and repurposed it as, well, not even like a fully fun-- like a phone that most people would used to call or text. Because I didn't tell my parents about it, so I couldn't get a phone plan for it. I don't think they know to this day. I don't remember if I ever used in front of them. But my brother might have known about it. He probably did. And my friends definitely knew about it. But yeah, I stole a phone. And, you know what, yeah, I probably would do it again, if I saw a phone that was seemingly abandoned. Finders keepers.

"We just kept talking and talking and doing other things, and next thing we knew it was 6 a.m." So first semester of college, I was really worried about making friends. I was like, "Okay, I'm just gonna, I'm gonna attend some club meetings and hopefully I'll find some people there." So I did. And I actually very quickly found people. First meeting of this one club, I found -- what, it's a group of six people, and we all would hang out every meeting and we were getting pretty close. We had hung out like a few times outside of the club, but not very much. But two of the group had never seen The Lord of the Rings and so we were like, "Okay, obviously we need to do that. We need to all do a watch-through." So we picked out a day, and we all went over to one person's dorm hall. It was just -- we were just out in the open and one of us like brought down an Xbox. We set it up with the TV and we just sat there watching The Lord of the Rings. This hangout started at like, I think 5 p.m. And we got through I think two of the movies -- which, this was the extended edition, so like, that was pretty long. And then we just kind of ended up talking for a long time after that. Which was very nice and very fun except we lost track of the time. And we just kept talking and talking and doing other things, and next thing we knew it was 6 a.m. We had been hanging out for like 13 hours straight. And so at that point we all, kind of a little like delirious after that long, we all left, except for the person who lived at that dorm hall. And we all went home. And I just like, whatever stage of friendship it is that you hang out for 13 hours straight, I think we just speedran that. Because after that it's like I've known them my whole life. We like to, we like to joke that we're like pair-bonded cats. Like we're just all very inseparable. But evidently I had nothing to fear about finding friends in college.

"And I was a little bit hesitant, but I prepared the potatoes, I prepared all the stuff in kind of an order, and it went so much better." So, today I made baked potato soup, and it went much better than last time. The last time I made potato soup, it -- I was so rushed, and it was late at night, so I was so hungry. And I didn't have all of the necessary spices and things, so I just -- It wasn't the best experience. And I made a lot of it, like I did this time as well. But it just wasn't the best. But this time, I kind of learned from that previous experience. And I was a little bit hesitant, but I prepared the potatoes, I prepared all the stuff in kind of an order, and it went so much better. And I also got to snack on some carrots and dip while I was doing it, so I wasn't hungry, which was really nice. And when I was done, it was so good. I loved it. I don't know. I think I will definitely make this again.

“That’s the first time I’ve been able to touch him or even see him in person since the beginning of September.”

Note: There is language that is excluded in the transcript but not excluded in the audio. So, the night before this [diarist's boyfriend's] hearing recently to determine whether or not the judge would possibly reduce his bond or anything like that, I was setting up a Christmas tree I got as a surprise gift, and the Northern Lights were supposed to be out a little bit. And I had kind of seen them, little hints of them, during the night before I tried setting up this tree. And I needed to take a break because the lights on the tree were just bothering me. And I went outside and I saw a shooting star, and I tend to think those are good luck and it's not -- I mean, I know it's during sort of a meteor shower right now, but the meteor shower in December isn't like super crazy compared to the Perseids. And I was only out there for maybe ten minutes because it was so cold. So, I chose to see that as good luck. I did not at all think that his bond would be changed. But I insisted on walking to the courthouse for this hearing, even though his family was in town from a different state for it, and offered to drive me. Because it's relatively close to where I live, and I walk there every week to do a video conference visit for free. And I just needed to do it. And because I have such a terrible sense of direction in buildings, other than hospitals, I went to the second floor of the building first. Which, normally, I mean, the second -- it's a two-story building that has the main courthouse in an annex. And I normally am familiar with the annex and am not familiar with how it connects to the courthouse. So I went upstairs first and then tried to cross over, but it was under construction. And I stopped and asked for directions from somebody who is, just happened to be absolutely f***ing terrible at giving directions. They were talking about wooden doors, and they were all wooden doors. It's a courthouse. Built a long time ago. And I was already somewhat late. I was getting, I was within five minutes of the hearing. And I was real confused, and so when I turned around to go back the…

“If they did not love me, they would not make fun of me and call me Danny DeVito.”

Years ago for Christmas, my son said, "Oh, you have one more gift coming." And I'm like, okay, that's cool. You know, but it isn't here yet. So, then all of a sudden it did come, like sometime in January. And it was a sequined pillow with the face of Nicholas Cage on it. And I just texted him, "Why?" And he just thought it was the funniest thing ever. You know, you can take, you can take Nicholas Cage and you can turn the sequins a different way and give him a mustache or make his hair long. I mean, there's all kinds of things you can do to play around with it. So this Christmas -- so I have it, I've kept the original one and this Christmas, I opened up my last gift and it was a sequined pillow of Danny DeVito. So I have the two of them now, side by side in the arm chair that I have in the living room. But yeah, that was -- then that one came from my daughter because she found it. And they used to joke with me about, just calling me Danny DeVito. I'm not really sure why they were -- they just thought it was funny. So it is kind of an inside joke and again, you know, when people do that it's because they love you. If they did not love me, they would not make fun of me and call me Danny DeVito.

“Anybody knows, in a house with kids when it gets too quiet, something’s up.”

It was Christmas Day and I was cooking in the kitchen. And the kids were playing. They were three and five. And I lived in Detroit. And they were playing with their toys. But as I was cooking in the kitchen, I noticed the silence. And I was like, "Hmm, what's going on?" So I snuck into their bedroom, and they were making Christmas cards for my mother, who was coming over that night. Here I thought they were getting into things. And they were so -- doing something nice, and nothing to worry about. It was amazing. Usually, when it's all too quiet in a house with kids, anybody knows, in a house with kids when it gets too quiet, something's up. Not that day. That day, they were making Christmas cards for their Po-Po.

“I couldn’t even tell if my car was moving, because the whiteout was so whiteout.”

“Tell us about your worst driving in the snow story.” Oh, man. Okay, so I was driving home. This was like two years ago, last year maybe. And I was trying to get to church. It was the Advent Penance service. Yeah, so it was last year around Christmas. I was driving back from Lansing, and I'm driving home, and it was bad but it then got really bad the last five miles, okay, to my church. Like real -- like I have never been able to just not -- I couldn't even tell if my car was moving, because the whiteout was so whiteout. The motion of the snow, and there was -- and you couldn't -- in relation to nothingness, right? Like there was nothing. I couldn't see the snow land, I couldn't see beyond the snow. And I'm driving, and I'm like, at this point, like, it's just full-blown talking to God at this point. Because I'm just like, "Lord, like if you want -- Don't you want me to go to church?" Like, "Why are you making this harder?" Like, "Why are you making this so hard on me right now?" Like, "This is scary and this is crazy." Well. After that, after that prayer, you know, there was a brief, a brief clearing. And in front of me were people in the road, because their cars had completely fallen off the side. It wasn't just like a ditch. It's like a cliff. Okay, so their cars are vertical. Like, the engine part's up in the air, the trunk is like on the ground. You know, on this very steep hill. There's two cars like this. And the people, they had gotten out and they were standing in the road. And I'm thinking -- and I would, I would have hit them and killed them, okay? Because one, I was trying to stay on the -- and I could barely feel any kind of rumbles and I'm just trying to stay on any kind of rumble that I could barely feel through all the layers of snow. I couldn't see, again, I couldn't even tell you -- I had to look at the speedometer to see if I was even moving, because at this point, I wasn't even adding gas anymore. I wasn't really braking. I'm just kind of like, I don't really know if I'm…

“Bro, my mom would hold my hand in the house, okay?”

This is gonna sound even, like -- not stupid, but like it's not really that big of a deal. But anyway, it is to me, you know? ‘Cause today we went to Aldi and we got like… Well, like my dad and I went, but I was only one who went in, ‘cause he was like, "You know, why don't you just go buy it today?"I was like, "What? Like me alone? That's crazy." Like, "Yes. Yes, of course, I will." So I just -- literally all we had to get was milk, ‘cause that's all we wanted to buy. Like, that's like -- we didn't want anything else. Like we could, but we just, we just didn't want to. So, anyway, I, I went in by myself, guys. I know, I'm like, [a teenager]. At my grown age, I should have been doing this like a long time ago, but I am an only child and I have like pretty strict parents. Like, I was a pretty sheltered kid. Like I never even… Bro, my mom would hold my hand in the house, okay? The bar is so low. Like the overprotectiveness is crazy, you know? So like, I just, I never really did anything on my own. The only time I really felt free growing up was like camp, or like field trips, or anything remotely similar to that where I was like, away with other children. But it's never just been me, you know? Like, I haven't even finished my driver's training stuff yet because I started super late. So, and it's also on me ‘cause I was also scared, ‘cause I was like, "I don't know, I don't know what's going on." Like, "No, thank you. I don't want to sit behind a wheel. I barely have walked in a grocery store. What are we talking about?"

"And so that's how I got my first cat." It was during Covid, going into my senior year where I felt really, really lonely. Like how everyone else really felt during that time. And so, I was really hoping to get a pet. And I was begging my mom to please just let me get like a guinea pig or a hamster. Like I promise I'll take good care of it. Like I have all the time in the world right now. So she finally gave in, and took me to, I think just like Petco, or PetPlus. Was it? It's like a store, a pet store. And when we first went, it was moreso I was gonna get a guinea pig or something, but when we went there, they actually had cats. They had rescued cats there. They usually don't. They don't always have like cats or dogs or animals like that. But because like coincidentally the day that we went they had cats, my mom saw the cat that was in the little, like, their area, and she also fell in love with -- actually it was only one cat remaining out of like four. And he was also sleeping, and so we couldn't like take a look at his face. But like, I mean, it was set and done. Like I was like, "Pleeeease let us," like, "let me get this cat, Mom." Yeah. She was also like, "Yeah, okay." And so that's how I got my first cat. His name is Theo.

"We end up having a big, big, big, big simba." Yeah, I've been thinking for the past few days, "What can I share with the group?" And it is hard sometimes, when you are thinking of the best topic to share with people, then you end up finding a lot of stories. So today I pick a story from simba. Simba is a common word for dogs in Africa. It is rude sometimes to call, for instance, dog as Mofart. Where I come from the culture does not allow. Probably people will be thinking, "Why call somebody Mofart?" "Why call a dog Mofart?" I mean. So, simba. I want to share a story about simba. So, sometime back probably 15 years ago, my mom wanted a dog. And of course, my mom and my elder brother, they love dog. The other group is my sister and I, probably we are not fond of pets. So we were debating, then my dad decides, "Hey, a friend of mine, who is a serviceman, has a German Shepherd puppy." Then my mom convinced my dad, "Hey, probably, we should go and take a puppy." That's how we ended up having a simba. It is not easy, a dog growing. I remember it was young, taking care of the bro, it was not easy. Especially my mom telling us, "Hey, you have to cook." Especially when our -- the person who was helping us in the house chores was not available. Then simba is growing every day now and then, and we end up having a big, big, big, big simba. So, I remember when we were coming from school sometime -- that is during the half terms when the school, it is out like half of the term -- we could go with the simba, with my brother, to train him how to hunt. Yeah, that's all I wanted to share about simba.
