“You say, ‘Well, there’s salads at the school.’ You know what’s in the salad?”

I really am glad that they made lunches free this year, uh, so it can be accessible for everyone. But what is this talk about, we -- that we should be 'eating healthier?' Just eating more nutriti- nutritious foods and less caloric, less -- with less junk food, when our school is serving us the exact characteristics of unhealthy food? Do you know what we have on our lunch menu? Let's start. Well, first off we have the hamburgers -- and they're not even that good 'cause they got no vegetables in them! No tomato, no lettuce. It's literally just a white, white bread -- white squishy bread, which is not healthy, and some like oily patty. I don't, I don't even know what it's made out of. Then we have hot dogs, again just white bread and a sausage. I don't even know how they feel full from this food, because you're actually supposed to 'eat the rainbow,' that's how you feel healthy. That's why salads are so healthy. Not because they're made out of vegetables, but because it's a variety of different foods, you're getting a variety of different nutrients. And then next we have -- okay, so let me talk about the salads. You say, "Well, there's salads at the school." You know what's in the salad? Do you know what it is? Okay: lettuce, lettuce, and lettuce. It's just lettuce and it's not even -- it doesn't even look like organic lettuce, it's just dry lettuce. And you know what else? Just to make it -- the salad a little bit more colorful so it's not just lettuce? It's -- and the lettuce doesn't even taste natural by the way. I'm telling you, I love lettuce, and I would -- I, I'll eat a whole batch of it, but that does not taste like lettuce.  But you know what they do to make it a little more colorful? They add chicken nuggets. Chicken nuggets! It's literally -- I mean, it depends on what type of chicken nuggets you eat. But considering the fact that the school serves hot dogs and hamburgers, chicken nuggets are probably the same McDonald's type of food. So, kind of junk food, you know? So why are they putting chicken nuggets, junk food, into the one healthy meal that we have at our school? And fine, don't eat the chicken nuggets, but then it's completely…

“I said, ‘So, did anybody notice I was throwing up?'”

Then we had to disembark from the ship, and we had made reservations for a hotel for that night because we didn't wanna have to take a chance of missing a flight if we got off the ship late or had problems with transfers or whatever. So, we stayed overnight at a hotel and we needed some supper, but we didn't wanna go anywheres and there was a 7-Eleven next door. And so we went there and got sandwiches for our supper, which I think probably was a very bad idea because the next morning, we had to catch a U -- Uber at five o' clock in the morning and when I woke up about quarter after four, I was so sick. Oh my gosh, I was sick, sick as a dog. And I had the dry heaves, and, because there was nothing in my stomach. And, uh, but we had to go to the airport in Orlando to catch our flight.  And, uh, so we went and I drank some water and ate a graham cracker, and, hoping that it would help and we got to the airport and were s- -- we got through TSA and all that foolishness and were just waiting. And my husband, and my son-in-law were gonna go get us some breakfast and bring it back 'cause we had some things we were keeping track of, luggage. And while -- just after they had walked away, I said to my daughter, I said, "I think I'm gonna throw up. I- I'm j- -- I feel sick." She said, "Well, there's a trash can right over there," just kind of offhand. She was kind of joking. Well, I was not joking and I ran over and I just barely made it in time and I threw up in the trashcan multiple times. It was just water, mostly. But anyway, I threw up in the trashcan, then came back and I said, "So, did anybody notice I was throwing up?" She said, "Oh yeah, there was about 100 people walked by, and some people looked sympathetic and some people were like, grossed out." So, I said, "Well, at least they wouldn't know who it was that did it because I had my head in the trash can, so they won't recognize me later."

“But I do not like shrimp at all.”

Have I ever made myself eat something out of politeness?  Yes, I remember being a dinner guest at a place where I didn't know the host and hostess at all. They were like the family friend of someone I knew in college and he was like, "Okay I'm gonna, I have to go and, and hang out with my, you know, these friends of my parents," and "Would you come with me?" "Oh sure, I'll go." But she didn't ask us ahead of time what we might want to eat, and she plopped down in front of us, um, like a -- what was it? It was, well I know it had shrimp in it, but I think it was like an egg dish. Like, it might have been like a shrimp omelette or a shrimp frittata or something. If these sound like weird dishes, it's because like, I don't eat shrimp, so I don't know the kinds of things that shrimp gets cooked into.  I remember like the plate was pretty. It was a nice presentation, you know, she seemed like she was a really comfortable cook, just like whipping these things out and plopping them down in front of us. But I do not like shrimp at all. Like, I really don't like it. But it wasn't like a serve yourself kind of situation. She just put this plate in front of us. So I did my best. I don't even know how I managed it. And fortunately for me, my friend also, I guess, was not a big fan of shrimp. And she, the host, at the end of the meal, she kind of laughed, and she said, "Okay, [Name], you were very polite, but I wanna have you over again. So will you please tell me what you didn't like about the dish?" So she could tell that he was really just making his best effort. So I think I probably did a better job than he did because I didn't know them at all and really felt compelled to you know, to make a good impression or whatever, or not insult them.

“This was not Bambi.”

Note: There is language that is excluded in the transcript but not excluded in the audio I come from a family of deer hunters. All the boys deer hunted, my father deer hunted. And when I was about four years old, I remember him being very excited about getting a deer. "We're gonna get a deer!" And we always went up to my grandma's house in Alpena to hunt deer. And remember, I was four years old, so "getting a deer," and he's talking about how he's going to get a beautiful deer and he's gonna bring it home and he's gonna tie it up in the cellar. So that's all I know. He's gonna tie up Bambi for me and I'm gonna get to pet her, in my head, is what I thought. Well, he come home and he was dancing and he was excited and he got a deer and I went running down to my grandma's cellar which was a old Michigan basement with a dirt floor. And what do I find, but a strung up deer with its tongue hanging out and its body dressed the way hunters dress a body and there was no guts and it was just hanging there. This was not Bambi and this was not a deer that I was gonna get to pet and I freaked the f*** out. It was awful. I could never bring myself to eat meat -- deer meat, venison. I cooked it for my children, I made it for my husband, but I could never bring myself to eat it. Well, when we were moving, I moved from Detroit to [town], which is about 120 miles. And I had -- my cousins were helping us and my mom had -- instead of helping pack, she decided she would make our dinner. And when we all got out to the house, would you come over to her place and eat. And she made sloppy joes and a whole plethora of food for out -- the moving crew to come and eat. And I got one of them sloppy joes and I put a big old mound of meat on it and I took a big bite. And my mom was watching me. And I couldn't figure out why she was watching me. And I just about sh** when I took a bite and realized it was venison.…

“This thing waddles across the street and I’m like, ‘Come on.’”

One day, a friend of mine came over to visit, and he -- also me and my roommate. So it was the three of us visiting, my roommate and I on one side of a very small porch, he on the other side, and we had decided to order pizza. So, we're eating pizza on the porch in a city, and I'm -- and, I should say, if this makes a difference to anyone, that I owned the home that we were at, so I'm not being a total animal when I describe what happened next. But I'm eating the pizza, and I don't really like crusts that much, so I was throwing the crusts into the bushes. And in my head I'm thinking, "Eventually, something, some critter, will find this." So as I'm doing this, my roommate who by nature is anxious -- and during COVID was beyond anxious, to the point that it was often stressful to be around her. So, anyway, I'm throwing these crusts into the bushes and she says something about, "You need to be careful or you're gonna lure, you know, like a skunk here." So, you know, in my head I'm thinking, "Yeah, it could be a skunk that eventually eats this. It could be a raccoon or a possum or birds, you know, why does it have to be the worst thing?" So that's the first thought I have. And the second thought I have is like, "Okay, well that's not gonna happen anytime soon." And I say as much, I say, "Yeah, I'm really not that worried about it, it's fine." As I'm saying that, middle of the day, a skunk walks across the street, right towards where I was throwing these crusts. And honestly, I think skunks can have rabies, and they definitely are not usually active during the day, or at least I don't normally see them, especially in an urban setting, but it was just like comedic timing. Immediately after I said that, this thing waddles across the street and I'm like, "Come on." Like most of the time when my roommate is being very anxious, it is unfounded. And this time when I thought maybe it was unfounded, it turned out that I was very wrong. So thankfully, we just kind of slowly -- I and my roommate -- slowly went in the house. And my friend…

“I felt like I had, you know, put their business at risk with my maneuver.”

My mom made cakes, as like a side hustle back in the '80s and early '90s -- like wedding cakes and whatnot. So, there was like a cake supply store that she would often drag me to and, thankfully for me, there was an aisle that had some cake toppers that were out, kinda there for kids to play with, was my understanding, because I'd been to that cake store a number of times and that's exactly how I spent my time. There was a little Batman cake topper and a Superman one. Those are the ones I remember in particular, but there was a few others. My mom would plop me down and I would just go into my little imaginary world with my Superman and Batman and company, and she would go take care of her cake business. And one day came along where I was like -- my little five-year-old head was like, “You know, it would be a lot cooler -- would be if I just took these cake toppers with me, took 'em home, then I could play with them whenever I wanted.” And so I did. Put them in my pocket, knew that I was stealing them. I was fully aware of the fact that it wasn't the right thing to do, but I did it anyway. And so, flash forward to my grandpa's house. It was me, my grandparents, my dad and my older brother, three years older than me. And we had this kinda routine where you had dinner and then after dinner, they would roll the TV into the dining room and they would turn on Jeopardy and watch Jeopardy and continue having conversation at the dinner table anyway.  And it was during this point after dinner, when I thought it would be smart -- in my head, I was like, “This’ll, this’ll be fine.” And I thought it was smart to pull out my new toys that I had stolen and play with them at the dinner table, kinda low-key. And it was my older brother who saw that and he knew what he was doing. I remember being able to tell from the tone of his voice. He was like, “Oh, hey, where'd you get those from?” And I wasn't ready to answer that question so I'm sure I stumbled, I don't remember what I said, but it soon…

“Oh my gosh, it was so awkward. And I just felt like I was dying inside.”

Okay, this was um -- the story that I'm thinking of was a time when I tried to be very quiet to remain undetected and I was successful and I was very sorry. So, I was still in grad school, but I had a really good job working in, in an office on campus here. And, uh, I was working late. I don't know if I was working on my job itself, or I might’ve been working on stuff for -- you know, as a, as a grad student, sometimes I would work on my school work there, and they were, they were fine with that. That wasn't a problem. But anyway, it's late at night and I hear one of the people who works there, um, come back into the office. Like, I had been completely alone for a couple of hours, but they -- I don't know if they'd been out to dinner or had gone to like the lo- -- the movie theater that was downtown. But they came back. She came back and she had her husband with her. And at first, I just was really quiet. I don't know why I didn't immediately make myself known to them. I think I thought they were just coming in, she was getting something, and they were gonna leave again, so that, that must have been it. So I didn't make myself known to them. ['Cause this was kind of in] the back office. And the way the office was laid out, if you were, like, where her office was, you couldn't see whether lights are on or anything back in, in -- like in my part of the office.  Well, they started to have an argument and it got really heated. And, if I'd known it was gonna turn out that way, maybe like the minute they started to bicker, I could've, like, made some noise or something, and then pretended I hadn't really heard anything they'd said, and then that would have just ended it. But then, I didn't and again I just sat there hoping that they would, um, you know, wrap it up quickly and go. But it was quite an argument. And she was really crying and emotional, and she was talking to him about, um, you know, how this was so indicative of his personality and these deep issues she felt he…

“I turned around and two guys are just like looming over me, watching me.”

Note: There is language that is excluded in the transcript but not excluded in the audio. I'm on a walk right now. I'm on a walk ‘cause it's nice. But my transition lenses are not cutting it for this sun and also, I feel really paranoid walking outside, sometimes. But mostly just ‘cause yesterday, I went to the gym. And they made me a little paranoid ‘cause I was doing a rowing machine and I turned around and two guys are just like, looming over me, watching me. And the other rowing machine is open. So I'm like, "What the f***!" And so I make eye contact with both of them and then they spring into action like they were just on NPC mode in the pause menu or some s***. I don't know.

“Because the key to shutting down a bully is making them feel stupid.”

Note: There is language that is excluded in the transcript but not excluded in the audio. So I was actually always really good at standing up to bullies, which is probably why I didn't get bullied very much. Um, and like I was a fat kid, so I was definitely in danger of being bullied. But it rarely happened, and I think that was because I shut it down so fast whenever it did happen. Because the key to shutting down a bully is making them feel stupid. Which, I don't love --  like, I don't want to go through life making people feel stupid, but if they're going to be cruel enough to try and bully someone, then, yeah, I'm gonna be there for that. Um, because they do it to feel empowered, right? So when you make them feel stupid, that's the exact opposite of what they want. And interesting thing is, the only example I can really remember wasn't really making them feel stupid, but I think just calling them out.  It was in 8th grade. My best friend, uh, we had math class together. And she had told me that in a -- in science class -- I don’t know if -- I guess it was earlier that day. The chair she was sitting in had broken. And, you know, she fell on the ground and everything, and I mean like, I think we can all agree that in 8th grade that would be humiliating, right? And people laughed and, you know. And so this girl who was, like, a popular girl just could not get over it and was like, bringing it up and bringing it up and I -- see, I don't know if it was the same day or not, because I know she had brought it up a lot and she just kept laughing about it. And it wasn't even like she was trying to be super cruel about it. She just thought it was so funny but, like, there's just no sense of like, thinking of how that might impact somebody, which is probably a problem popular people have. Not that I would know.  But anyway, so we were in math class, and my friend sat behind me and then [name] sat behind her. And [name] was telling someone about the incident and laughing and I knew [friend’s name] was feeling s***** about it because…

“So we got up there — keep in mind, I have not practiced this, not even once.”

Okay, so, freshman year, we had Olympics, and we were supposed to do like a little dance, and this is for school, it's nothing crazy. And I was supposed to prepare with two of my friends. We did not prepare. Oh, there was also someone else, but, like, they didn't really have like a huge part. It was just like they were supposed to dress up in a hippo costume and just do their part. Um, and, I don't know, we just -- we didn't practice, we kept procrastinating. We honestly thought, like, we could wing it, it's fine, whatever. I honestly had not even processed what it was gonna be like. So in my mind, we were just gonna do something, and we were gonna plan it out, figure it out. I was like, maybe we're not even performing, right? Because we haven't thought about it. It's the lunch before, they're downstairs, I’m upstairs. We're not even, we're not even communicating. I'm in the cafeteria eating lunch, they are actively downstairs practicing something that I was unaware existed. And I meet up with them, I'm like, "Hey guys, like I could not find you, like, I never got a text. I did not know if we were meeting up or what we're doing. Are we doing something?" And the person who was supposed to be in a hippo costume, he also had no idea what was going on. So, um, yeah, they were basically like, "Yeah, we made a little soundtrack and we're just gonna dance to it," and I was like, "Okay, cool, do I have to do something?" and they're like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, just like follow the lead." And I was like, "Okay, cool." So we get up there -- keep in mind, I have not practiced this, not once, I don't even know what they have planned out. So we get up there and I'm literally just smiling and moving my feet like ever so slightly and just kind of staring off in the distance. I'm like, "What are we doing? Like, what is this?" And I'm trying to mimic whatever they're doing, but they're not doing anything. So we're all just awkwardly standing there. It was so bad. I did redeem myself last year, I guess this year. I mean like just like last Olympics, I guess, where we actually properly did a dance,…
