“He must have had me on that stage singing ‘I’m a Little Teapot’ seven times that night.”

Note: There is language that is excluded in the transcript but not excluded in the audio. Tell us about a tryout or audition that didn’t go as expected. I never tried out for anything, or auditioned for anything, but when I was in high school, I was a senior, we -- I was in the choir, and we had an all-night -- it was a -- to build our resources. What is that called? And you get donations, I can't remember what it's called. But, a friend of mine -- you could inquire to have your friends sing on stage. And this guy must have saved his dollars for weeks, because he must have had me on that stage singing "I'm a Little Teapot" seven times that night. And it was a five dollar shot to get your friend up on the stage. So, he spent a lotta money to get me up there and he would always request me to sing, "I'm a little teapot, short and stout. Here is my handle, here is my spout." And the choir director wouldn't let me do it after I was done singing, "I'm a f***ing teapot, short and stout. Here is my f***ing handle, here is my f***ing spout." [laughs] I was done with it.

“Life for them is very different than it is for us.”

Things I'm grateful for this week? Uh, that it's almost over. It's been a roller coaster. I guess, in the mix of talking about gratefulness, I'll also be talking about the challenges because they all kinda weave in and out. At the start of the weekend, two very good friends of ours, um, they had their baby and that's exciting. So we were watching their dog, and they just came home today and they want us to come over and meet the baby. They're more, like -- they were my husband's friends first, and so we've become good friends. I have a complicated relationship in my head, I think. I think, in general, we all get along, but it's been a little bit of a struggle because life for them is very different than it is for us. And so on the challenging front, on Monday, I had another checkup at my OBGYN to see if my fertility medicine was working as it was supposed to. And it was not very clear. And so, my husband and I are in a limbo. I don't know how many months we'll try this before they put us at the next step, which would probably be IUI, I think. It's just very consuming of the brain. And then, you go meet your friend's baby, and it's not your friend's fault that getting pregnant was a walk in the park. And you wanna hold it in because that's just a really crummy way to be, right? But, it's also just really hard right now to celebrate everyone else's successes when your body just won't do it. And it's me, I'm the problem, not my husband. So, lot of feelings. Um, but we're gonna go because we do want to meet the baby and we're gonna be -- we're literally their closest physical friends and then like, we are there for one another a lot, so it just seems like we're gonna be pretty involved in this kid's life. Should probably meet him. And I would never want them to have an inkling that I'm struggling with something right now, because I want them to just be living in this moment of joy. So. My husband’s very sweet. He knows I’m struggling, so I’m grateful for him. But he also knows like, I just wanna pack it away for a little bit tonight, and just…

“If you ever said anything good, then I’d notice it.”

A long time ago, like in the late nineties, I used to work at the Subaru factory that's in Indiana. The one that builds all of the Outbacks, and now builds the Ascent. That one. And I worked in the IT department. I was in the mainframe computer room at that time. I forget what brought this on, but I was angry, and I stormed into the computer room, and then my supervisor stormed in after me and we started having an argument. And she accused me of being negative and alw- -- only ever hearing the bad stuff. And I said, "Well that's -- well, if you ever said anything good, then I'd notice it." And she said, "Oh, yeah? Well, I do!" And I said "Oh yeah? Well, give me an example."  And she says, "Well, yeah, I complimented you on this thing, a week ago." And I'm like, "Okay, that's one." And she said, "Well, and then I complimented you on this other thing, said you did a good job on Tuesday.” “That's two." And she said, "And just yesterday, I said you did a good job on this third thing." I said, "Well, that's three. Damn it. You're right." She’s like, "Well no, don't just tell me I'm right, I don't want to hear that." I’m like, "No, you gave me three examples. You're right. You do tell me good things and compliment me." And since that day, in like 1997 or 8, I try to remember to listen when I get actual good feedback on something. Took coming down to a simple "One, two, three, nope, you're right" situation. Which in retrospect is funny, but at the time was really stressful.

“No matter where you are, you are not alone and you’re not behind, okay?”
Forms and related;

“No matter where you are, you are not alone and you’re not behind, okay?”

And I just, I wanted to share some things that I think would particularly help seniors. So, first of all, my first realization of this week was that you are not behind at all. Every single person that I know was talking about this feeling that they're behind, okay? I'm talking the smartest of the smartest, the best of the best. I'm talking people, you know, if we, who, we share the same boat, we each have the same like grades, same like level of comprehension of things, like we are literally, we have the same level of abilities and a lot of different things and we were like, we still were panicking just as much as the people who were more competitive than us and less competitive, competitive than us. It didn't matter how competitive they were, if they had the same feeling. And so, no matter where you are, you are not alone and you're not behind, okay? It's just, it's a common feeling amongst all. And so, the reason I also say you're not behind is because I think that, like realistically, speaking from, you know, the beginning of September, we have a long time before college apps are due. And yes, there are some scholarships that go out like earlier and like, you know, they close up faster or whatever, but realistically this is the very beginning, we still have a lot of time to prepare. We have a lot of time to add new activities to our list and take on more volunteering opportunities and do whatever, and even if we don't do like, like two things, even if we do a single item, that's still good like, even if you add a singular thing to your list of activities until college apps you're good, like it doesn't have to be a big thing, you know. Even if you don't add anything at all like who's to say that your application isn't already spectacular. Just because you think it's bad does not mean that it's bad. Okay, and trust me we are really bad at judging stuff, like, we are notoriously bad.
