“You’re going to explode. And I’m going to let you.”

So, I bought a Saturn ION in 2003. And I went to pick it up, and my father, who was retired and loved getting new cars, was bored, and I said, “Would you like to come to the dealer and pick up my new car with me?”

“Oh, I would love to,” he said, “That would be fun.” So I picked up my dad and we went, ’cause I didn’t think I’d be there very long, and we went to turn in my car and get my new one. And this time, the gal that was our salesman says, “Oh, we have a new thing.” She says, “I won’t be handling the complete transaction. You’ll be going to the transaction manager, and he will take care of your paperwork and all the rest of it.” I said, “Okay.”

So, my dad looked around the showroom for a while, he was just looking at all the different new cars and everything, which is part of the reason he went. And then he went outside and he was just kind of wandering around out in the new car lot, another reason he went. And then he came in and he came into the office where I was, and just sat down in another chair that was there. And I introduced him to the person I was dealing with, who then said to my father,

“Oh, it’s so nice that you could come and make sure your daughter got everything right.”

And my dad looked at me like, “You’re going to explode. And I’m going to let you.” And I said, “No, I didn’t need my dad for that.” I said, “I brought him along ’cause he likes new cars, and I thought he’d enjoy being here, and he’s retired, so he came along just to look at the cars.” And the guy said, “Oh yes, but you needed your father to help you decide if this was the right car to purchase.” And I said, “No.” I said, “He doesn’t have anything to do with that.” I said, “In fact, my mother doesn’t even let him come along with her when she’s buying a car because he has picked out too many cars for her that she didn’t like to drive.” And my dad kind of giggled, not giggled, but kind of laughed and chuckled under his breath like, “Yeah, I’m not even allowed to go with her mother when she gets a new car. And I just came ’cause I like to look.” So, when they asked me to rate the guy, I let him have it. And I figured that this would make a difference because it was — the dealership was owned by a woman.
