MI Diaries came back on April 11th for the 2026 Science Fest, where our team members had the pleasure of chatting with the public about sociolinguistics. We also did some ad hoc data gathering with them to figure out how Michiganders’ [æ] vowel (like in ‘hand’ or ‘hat’) is changing over time, and whether young people are calling their fizzy drinks ‘pop’ or ‘soda’.
