“I’ve always thought that was one of my foxiest things ever.”

There was this — when my daughter was in high school, there was a guy that really liked her a lot. And he was very nice and he was very pleasant and they got along well. And I always liked him, but she didn’t. She was — they were good friends but they never dated. And after she graduated from high school, and he was in college, and she — they both went to the same college at that time, and they had run into each other, but they hadn’t really done anything else.

And one day, I was on my way home from school. And I know this is a crazy thing, but I was on my way home from school and I stopped at a stop sign. And on the other side of the stop sign, just stopped, was [Name], who was this boy. And he rolled his window down, and he looked at me and he said, “Hi Mrs. [Surname], how are you?” And I said, “Oh, I’m fine, [Name].”

He said, “Can you give me [your daughter’s] phone number? I don’t think I have it anymore. And I’d really like to call her. I saw her from a distance at the — at school, and I wanted to call her and I don’t have her phone number.”

And so I said, “Sure.” And I gave him her phone number. And I went on back to my house and he went on the other direction and so much was that and nothing happened. And I didn’t think anything about it much at all, except for that about two days later, we were getting ready to go to a swim meet for my son at another school. And I saw as we were getting — going out to get in the car and [my daughter] said, “I’m going to go separately,” and I said, “You’re going to drive all the way to [town]?” She went, “No,” she said, “I’m, I’m going.” — She said, “[Name] is coming to pick me up.” She said, “He wanted to go and so I said okay, and we’re going to go together.” I said, “Okay, fine.”

And I’m thinking to myself, “Good! Maybe she’ll go out with him. He was a nice guy. He’s better than the — anything she’s gone out with since.” So, you know, and I said to my husband, “Oh, that’s good, he’s a nice guy.” My husband said, “Oh, I like him. Yeah, I remember him.” He said, “He ate a lot, but I liked him and he used to come over here and eat pizza.” And I said, “Yeah, he did.”

And so we are having this conversation. Just about that time as we’re pulling out of the garage and [my daughter] and [Name] are starting to decide who’s — what they’re doing and getting into the car, [Neighbor], who was our neighbor’s daughter and her brother swam with my son, [Neighbor] comes flying around the back corner. And she says — she gets into the car with [my daughter] and [Name], and she says, “Are you guys going to the swim meet? I need a ride.” And they both look at her. And they were like, “Okay, yeah, we’re going to the swim meet.” They said, “You don’t want to ride with my mom and dad?” “No, I don’t want to ride with your mom and dad. I’m having a fight with my mom and dad. My mom said I had to go to the swim meet, so I said, ‘Okay I’m going to ride with [the neighbors].’” And she got in the car and went with us — or, went with [them].

And so about halfway through the swim meet, as she’s sitting there talking to them and she’s talking, then by then she’s gotten over her fight, talking to her mom and dad. She says to, to me, she said, “Were [your daughter] and [Name] on a date?” And I said, “I’m not totally sure.” She said, “Okay, I kinda got the feeling that they might be on a date after I got in the car with them, and I — we pulled down the road, and I thought it’s too late for me to get out of the car. Now I’m on this date with them whether I like it or not.”

Well, [my daughter] and [Name] did start to date, and they did get married eventually and they did have [the neighbor] as their — one of their bridesmaids, because after all she went on their first date. And it’s just kind of funny because I really felt funny about that, but I had said to [Name] at the time, I said, “You should call [my daughter],” when I gave him her phone number, I said, “You should call her. She’s not doing anything.” And I’ve always thought that was like a very foxy thing for me to do. I never told her — I’ve never told her that I gave her his — him her phone number. I think she figures he’d still had it from before ‘cause it was the same number. But some things are meant not to ever be told, and I don’t know, maybe he told her he got the phone number from me, but she never said anything to me and I’ve always thought that was one of my foxiest things ever ‘cause I do like him. He’s a great son in law. I think he’s a wonderful guy and I’m glad she married him, but I just think it’s kinda funny because I’m not sure how that would have gone otherwise.
