“Bill knows he’s on his way back towards the barn and […] he will take off and hurry his way back.”

When we go to Mackinac we always get a taxi from the — where the ship or the boat comes in to carry our luggage and stuff because we always stay a week, and I always have food and stuff that I brought with me. And so we have horses that take us up there, and it’s always interesting to see how the drivers handle the horses. I know one time when we were there, we rented a carriage, and it was a, it was a self-drive carriage, it wasn’t somebody driving you around,  you drove the carriage yourself.

Well, that was a joke. You didn’t really drive the carriage, you got to hang on to the reins, and the horse knew the route it was supposed to take, and it just did its thing. And the horse we had, his name was Bill. And one of the things that I found very charming was as we were going along, anytime there was people who worked on the island along the road doing stuff or whatever, they say, “Oh, hi, Bill! How’s it going?”

Everybody talked to the horse and the horse plodded along, and we went along the shoreline road there, and then we turned at British Landing and went up through the middle of the island to go back, and as soon as we made that corner — and they had warned us about that, they said, “Now when you make that corner, Bill knows he’s on his way back towards the barn, and you’re gonna have to hold him back because he will take off and, and hurry his way back. And if you wanna get your money’s worth, you wanna hold him back.” And sure enough, we turned that corner and boy, Bill just — he had been just kind of plod, plod, plodding along, and we turned that corner and he picked up his stuff even though it was uphill. And he’s doot, doot, doot up the hill. We got him slowed down again, and, and like I said, as we went along, everybody had to say hello to Bill, and then Bill took us back to the barn like we were supposed to be. So I thought it was pretty funny that it was self-driving, but it was actually horse self-driving, not people self-driving.
