I have a friend who often has unrealistic expectations about what they can do. The main one being in the kitchen. Now, this friend believes they are an incredible cook. And it is true they love the food they cook. They love it so much. It makes them so happy. And unfortunately, most people don’t love it. Most other people, it is not quite to their palate. And that’s hard, and my friend struggles to understand that because they think it is the most delicious thing that has ever graced God’s green earth. And other people can barely eat it. And I lived with this person in a big house where they cooked for us once a week and this was really difficult.
And then one day after eating their food for most of a year, I walk into the kitchen and there’s a lot of baking stuff around, and I go like, “Oh, what are you making?” And they’re like, “I am baking my first ever cake.” I’m like, “Oh, that’s so much fun. Congratulations, like what’s it for?” “Someone’s birthday.” “Oh great.” And then I’m like looking at their cake and I’m like, “What, what kind of recipe are you following?” And they were like, “I don’t need a recipe. I don’t cook with a recipe. Recipes are silly.” And my jaw just dropped. I just stared at them. You’re kidding me. You’ve never baked a cake before in your life, and, and you didn’t even like, talk to anyone about how baking is fundamentally different than cooking in important ways where you should follow a recipe and actually measure your ingredients? And you’re already not that good of [a] cook. Oh! Well, safe to say that cake was terrible, but I hope they figured it out since then. I’m not really sure what they’re up to, but I, I believe that they have made some good cakes in their life. I would like to believe.
