“I didn’t know what sociolinguistics was before.”

"Have you ever been interested - have you ever become interested in something just because you had a really good experience with a particular person? One of our team members was not interested in math until they had a class with a teacher that made it exciting." Yeah, a great teacher is one of those great experiences in life for me. That's cool to hear you had that kind of experience. Yeah, branching outside math a little bit 'cause yeah, I've definitely, I remember like almost all my math teachers and what I learned for them - from them. There was always, there's almost always like some central thing that I remember about that class. Or something that they said to me. But yes, have I ever become interested in something just because you had a really good experience with a particular person and maybe something that I wouldn't have been interested in otherwise... I mean, hopefully not too on the nose, but I didn't know what sociolinguistics was before I started contributing to Michigan Diaries. I had a broad understanding of what sociology was and linguistics. And I guess you know, I'm still a lay person. But yeah, definitely have, I would say an interest in linguistics, more than I would have had I not participated in Michigan Diaries.

“How do you observe Disenchantment Tuesday, you ask?”

I want to talk about a holiday that I invented several years ago, and I am doing my darnedest to promote it. My darnedest meaning that I post about it every year on Facebook. So I guess that's not really like a lot of effort. This holiday originated on a Tuesday in October roughly five years ago when I was just having a bad day. I was feeling grumpy and I was feeling weird. And so I decided, "you know what, you know what today is? Today is Disenchantment Tuesday, that's what it is." And I was in a strange enough mood that I not only declared that day Disenchantment Tuesday, but I put it on my Outlook calendar for the second Tuesday, the next October. And every year when that time rolls around I do that again, I put it on my Outlook for the next year. And how do you observe Disenchantment Tuesday, you ask? Well, this is how you observe Disenchantment Tuesday. You try a food, TV show, song, whatever; something from your personal yesteryear that you used to love, ideally when you were a child, and you try it again to see what it's actually like. Sometimes this goes cheerfully and your Disenchantment Tuesday is derailed, and that's okay because that's a good thing. When you find out that something actually was good, that's great. But in my experience, more often than not, you find out that, "wow, that was a piece of junk. Why did I ever love that?" I'm not going to mention the specific things that I've done this with because I don't want to bad mouth companies whose employees depend on the revenue they get from selling the things that children think are awesome, that you grow up and find out are not so awesome, maybe, as you thought they were. But that's that's how you do it. That's what you do. Sometimes you're pleasantly surprised and sometimes you're not so pleasantly surprised, so, tell your friends.

“I took off my life vest and we swam under.”

So, have you ever had a one in a million experience where something statistically improbable happened to you? I'm trying to think, I remember something dumb happened. I forget what it was.  What about your death roll?  Oh that one, I don't know if that's really statistically, like, improbable, but sure. I was going sailing in, like, these dumb little, like, bathtub boats because they fill up with water so quickly and so, me and a kid, we were like going around and it was like a nasty storm. Well, not nasty, but it was like it just cooled down and so we got on back on the water, but then like a bunch of winds just started picking up, so they told us to tack and so we started tacking. But like we got caught on something 'cause we were like close to shore. Like, probably - we got caught on something and it like literally pushed the boat over and instead of just turtling, we like, it like - Explain what a turtle is on a sailboat. Like, a boat like gets flipped fully over.  Okay. But it like turtled with us underneath. So that's called, heavier quotes, "death roll". And so I got yelled at because I told my teammate to take off his life vest and I took off my life vest and we swum - swam under and over because it was just easier than using a dumb life vest, but there's a rule never to take off your life vest, because it'd be safer to like -  Was your mast stuck in the muck and sinking?  Well, it wasn't necessarily sinking. But yeah, it was, like, it was kind of going in. I don't know how to say it better than that. It felt like it was getting lower, but it also didn't. No, but I just decided not to get stuck in there and possibly die, probably not die, but we just got over and got yelled at for taking off our life vests because somebody would've come to save us.  Is this the year you were called the Capsize Queen?  Yes.  You got really good at capsize recovery, didn't you?  Yes.

So I paired up with the first person and go rock paper scissors shoot. I throw scissors, they throw paper. A few months ago, I went on a retreat for my school. I've already been in this University for a few years, but I wanted, I wanted to kind of get to know people better and just really get more involved in my community 'cause, you know, you -- it's never too late to make more friends. But I was a little worried that I would go on this retreat and I wouldn't really meet any new people. Like when we were waiting to get on the bus, everyone was in their groups together, and there was a few people that I knew but it wasn't really -- like there wasn't the same kind of closeness. Um when we got on the bus, I sat by myself and I was just really hoping and praying that everything would turn out well. We end up -- so we go ride the bus, get to the retreat site, and we put our stuff away and we go through the process of kind of introducing ourselves, getting to know our orientation leaders, um, and then they tell us that we're going to play a rock paper scissors tournament. So every person would pair up with another person and you guys would play rock paper scissors and then the winner would go on to play the other winners and you would keep going and going until only one person was left and they were the winner of the whole tournament. I normally really get in my head for these things. So I just decided, you know what, I don't care. I'm just going to throw whatever and it's, it's fine that -- if I lose. But -- so I paired up with the first person and go rock paper scissors shoot. I throw scissors, they throw paper. And I'm like, "Okay, this is, this is nice." And I go with the second person and then again I win and then the third person I win again and I'm like, "This is kind of getting serious." Um, and so even after a few more times, I kept winning, and at this point, I'm -- there's like a little bit of attention starting to gather and people were like, "Oh my gosh, okay, like, you gotta…

“I would like make myself look like Santa out of bubbles…”

The most luxurious experience I've ever had, I'd probably - or I'd probably think like when I was younger, any like bubble bath I had in a hotel on vacation, like the - I just felt like luxury. I mean like going to Disney and taking a bath in one of the hotels, like - Well, it had to be a bubble bath, but taking one of those baths just felt not relaxing, but just like I felt free, 'cause like when I was younger I could do whatever I want, and I would like make myself look like Santa out of bubbles, and I just thought like I was at Disney taking a bubble bath. I mean, it felt like luxury.

“I have probably been in many food comas.”

"Have you ever been in a food coma, and what was the occasion? And what did you eat too much of?" I have probably been in many food comas. I can't remember all of them. One time that really stuck out to me was the night before my freshman year of high school, and I was just hanging out with some friends and I tried one of those Bang energy drinks for the first time, and it gave me a lot of energy that's for sure, and then I ended up going home and we had pizza, but it was pizza with a ton of banana peppers on it, and pizza with a ton of banana peppers combined with a Bang energy drink earlier was not a good combo at all. Ten out of ten, would not recommend. And I ended up staying up until like two A.M. which was a very rough time for my first day of school the next day. That was very rough.

“We beat the seniors in the art part.”

Oh, yeah, another fun thing that happened at my school. We have this thing called Olympics, which is basically like grades versus grades or a chance for seniors to like vent their stress and beat up other little children. I'm in the junior class. We got second place, you know, as expected. One thing that was pretty cool is that I was like the main - I was sort of like the leader, kind of, and it's kind of arrogant to say that, but it's in truth really a lot of people were asking me how they should paint something or how they should draw whatever, and so basically we had to design banners. And I'm - I'd say I'm like Fine Art. It's like I just started taking it this year as an official class, before it was more of a hobby. But, you know, I got to painting and it looked really cool, like our banner and stuff. Yeah. So I was happy with the design. There is some like little minor things that I wish I had a little more control over 'cause I didn't, like, like it that much. But it's a team activity. So it's not like I can get everything I want, especially since a lot of people were working on not just me, and it's not like we're all gonna like the same thing, you know? So I think that's really good for what we came up with, and we beat the seniors in the art part. So that's really funny.

“I tend to put on this facade… when in reality I’m burnt out.”

And today I wanted to talk about a new word that I learned today. It's - I was listening to a podcast titled, "How To Be Impeccable With Your Words," and it was kind of discussing mental health and how your words play a role in your mental health and the host used a term called toxic positivity and she stated that that's when you put on this facade that everything is great and fine. However, it's really, um, it's really not and how that can be really exhausting and degrading to like your - your own self if you aren't able to own your own words, and I think that is a really interesting term. I feel like I am pretty socially aware and like personally aware of my own feelings and how to express them and who I can express my feelings with but I also noticed that a lot of times like especially when talking about grad school I tend to put on this facade like, “Everything's great. I love it. I am just enjoying and soaking up every moment of being in grad school.” When in reality, I'm burnt out and stressed and disappointed and sleep deprived and isolated and... and I want to say that I'm thriving and having a great time because I have this support of family and friends who are cheering me on and happy for all that I've accomplished, but grad school is hard and I mean, there are... I'm sure there are other like deeper connections that people can make to the term toxic positivity, but 'cause it for sure can apply to like mental health and identifying when you need help and things like that, but I think it also is just a good word to describe a phenomenon that people use all the time.

"So that is what I like to call the saga of the missing wallet." One day I met up with a friend at a dining hall to eat lunch, and then we both got picked up by my mom to visit my house. The friend that I was eating lunch with she's really into horticulture and plants and stuff and my mom is a certified Master Gardener. So I thought that they would really like to meet each other. So yeah. That all went great. My friend mentions how she hasn't been using her combos, basically the predetermined snack thing you can buy from certain stores on campus. So I was like “Mom, how about you drop us off at 1855 Sparty’s?” which is canonically the best one, it has so many options. So she drops us off. And I pick out my combo. I've got a nice stack of Oreos. I've got a little fizzy drink that’s peach flavored. I, I have a veggie wrap. I was so excited so I get in line, I -- the person at the checkout asks me to scan my card, I reach into my pocket and… is not there. Like fully has disappeared. So, did not enjoy that. I had to return all of those items. I never got my Oreos. Very sad. And so I tried to call my mom. I text her “Hey, do you know where my wallet is?” She could not find it. So that was so fun. And then she reminds me that I have an appointment at 3 o'clock. The appointment went well. And then after, I -- I'd realized during the appointment that I might have left it at the dining hall. So I walk back to the dining hall and I ask the front desk “Hey, did you see a wallet?” And they were like “Yeah! We have that.” and finally I got my wallet. So that is what I like to call the saga of the missing wallet.

“… I had two brownies, a cookie, a big slice of pizza, fish, chips, fries, broccoli, two drinks.”

So two days ago, well, I ran yesterday, but two days ago, we went downstate to stay the night, and we got to go bowling and got to go eat at Central Michigan University. And it was a great time. But their buffet, oh my God, we got to eat there for like free because our coach paid for all of it. Probably like, it was the longest receipt I've ever seen in my entire life, but. So we went and I had two brownies, a cookie, a big slice of pizza, fish, chips, fries, broccoli, two drinks. And I don't know what I’m missing, but like it was so so good and they had an ice cream dispenser, but it was out of stock, and I was like, "Come on! They can't be out of stock of that." Because I had it last year when I went and I was like, "Oh my gosh, I want it." And I was a little bit sick yesterday when I had to run. Maybe, maybe that's why I didn't do well. But that's a different story.
